Majestic Murals is a privately owned company operated by three members of the MacNeil family living in
Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Senior artist Dan MacNeil is a third-generation
muralist who has been designing and executing murals since 1970. Much of his
career has been spent working as a billboard artist in the greater Boston area. This experience has
fine-tuned his color sense and enhanced his ability to reproduce any style or design, all learned while hanging from staging
hundreds of feet above ground. Dan has studied at the Museum School of Fine Arts
in Boston and has won first-place awards in art shows throughout Massachusetts. His artwork is currently on exhibit in several galleries on Cape Cod.
Dan's talent comes to him naturally as the son of a muralist, portrait painter, and glassblower. However, it was his grandfather James MacNeil, a muralist
and commerical artist for over 50 years, who taught him most about drawing and painting. One of James' early commissions
was the painting of Coca Cola signs on the sides of barns throughout New England during the Great
Depression. He designed logos for several Boston-area manufacturers including the drawing
of a fairy on a rock for the White Rock bottling company which is still in use today. Family
members fondly recall that when James first came to America
from Scotland, he was hired to paint a sign for a barbershop. Not having enough money to buy even a paintbrush, he fashioned one out of his own
hair.
Following in these talented and innovative footsteps, junior
artist Jonathan MacNeil is becoming a highly skilled painter of his own and now a fourth-generation muralist. Trained as a mechanical engineer at the University of Massachusetts
in Dartmouth, Jon minored in art, but his career began long before his education. Dan tells the story that when Jonathan was just a toddler, Dan would tape charcoal
to his tiny hands and let him draw freely in his studio while Dan worked on more serious art.
Wife and stepmom Jane MacNeil rounds out the company by
providing business management skills. She received an A.S. in secretarial science
in 1975 and has been administrating grants for scientific researchers since 1983. She
is currently studying organizational behavior through an independent undergraduate program at Skidmore
College in Saratoga Springs, New York.
