Trompe l’oeil is French for "trick the eye."  Trompe l’oeils are paintings that are so photographically realistic in detail that they deceive the viewer into thinking they are real.

This optical illusion of a building peeling up from the bottom is painted on the side of a five-story building in Providence, Rhode Island.  Not even the windows are real.

Here is an example of how to make a dark hallway brighter by adding the illusion of a window.  It was painted on a wall in a bed and breakfast in Charlottesville, Virigina, and the scene through the window is one of Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello.

You can even have a trompe l'oeil curtain painted in your living room or kitchen.  This curtain was painted in the bedroom of a young girl who has allergies to many synthetic materials.
